The Power of Listening

Whoever is listening,

Thank you for giving me the greatest gift of all.

I have come to realize why I am so closed to the world. So guarded, so emotionally ”locked up”.

My whole life I have been yearning to be understood. I used to be open. I used to share what I was thinking. I used to be able to be vulnerable.

Now I am closed. I am closed because I am afraid no one will listen. I am afraid I am not worth listening to.

I don’t feel alone when I sit in my room by myself. I don’t feel alone lying in bed at night.

The moments when I feel most alone are when I am not heard. When I open up to others and they chose not to listen. They chose not to hear. Do they not realize how long it has taken me to tell them this story, this memory, this feeling. How much inner wrestling, how much inner conflict, it has taken just to utter these few words.

Listening is the greatest gift you can give someone. And by this I mean truly listening. By truly listening you are telling that person that they are the only person in the world to you in that single moment. You are telling them that they are worth being undertood. You are giving their stories meaning. You are giving their life meaning.

Eyes hold within them an entire world. Eyes see the world around us. They tell a story of sadness, gratitude, pure joy, inner conflict. They reflect the deepest part of a person.

When we want to hide our feelings from the outer world, from the those around us, we look to ground. We hide our eyes. We lower our heads. We are afraid of others being able to see into the deepest part of our souls. The part of us that sometimes is hard to keep hidden.

Crying. Crying is the expression of pure emotion. It conveys the ultimate release of happiness and the crushing reality of sadness. It reveals when someone is numbingly afraid and when one is entirely overwhemled. Crying comes from the eyes. It cokes from the deepest part within our very being.

So to all those out there. Look into each others eyes. Show each other that you can see the real them. Show them that you can see the emotion lying behind what they say. Show them that what they are telling you matters.

So I ask of you, lets listen to one another. It is the first step to making the world a better place.

The Sharing

I would love to listen to what you have to say
